2018 Oscar Award Inspired Popcorn

Every year Cocktail Chameleon Author and Entertaining Expert Mark Addison creates signature Oscar Cocktails inspired for each of the Academy Awards’ Best Picture nominated films. This highly anticipated list of cinematic libations comes out the week after the nominees are announced. Mark pairs his Oscar Cocktails with Best Foreign Language Film flavored “Movie Popcorn” inspired by the countries’ food heritage and traditions. These pairings are ideal for your awards viewing party or to show support of your favorite movie in the race for the Oscar.

Film: A Fantastic Woman

Country: Chile

MAPUCHE POPCORN

Merken is a traditional Chilean seasoning created by the indigenous Mapuche people by blending chile powders, coriander, smoked sweet paprika, salt and oregano.

Ingredients:

  • 1 – 3.5 oz. bag of popped popcorn
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Merken
  • 1/2 oz. fresh lime juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:

Transfer the freshly popped popcorn to a larger zip lock bag, then add the spice mixture and drizzle the melted butter on top. Zip the bag closed and shake until the popcorn is evenly coated with spices.

Country: Lebanon

ZA’ATAR POPCORN

Za’atar is a the most popular spice mixture in Lebanese cuisine. The exact spices vary, but usually includes a mix of basil thyme, oregano, sesame seeds, and sumac.

Ingredients:

  • 1 – 3.5 oz. bag of popped popcorn
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons za’atar
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted

Directions:

Transfer the freshly popped popcorn to a larger zip lock bag, then add the spice mixture and drizzle the melted coconut oil on top. Zip the bag closed and shake until the popcorn is evenly coated with spices.

Country: Russia

CHAK-CHAK POPCORN

Top your popcorn like a traditional Russian Chak-Chak, a popular fried noodle coated in sticky honey sugar glaze.

Ingredients:

  • 1 – 3.5 oz. bag of popped popcorn
  • 8 oz honey
  • 4 oz sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vodka
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Directions:

Preparing the syrup: Pour the honey in a saucepan on medium heat and gradually stir in the vodka and sugar. Hold the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until all the sugar is dissolved. Pour the hot syrup onto the popcorn in a glass bowl and mix it well and carefully. Coat a glass baking dish with butter and spread the popcorn mixture evenly with spatula chilled with ice water to prevent sticking.

POPCORN PAPRIKASH

This Paprikash popcorn recipes uses Hungarian Paprika, dried thyme, garlic salt, onion salt and butter – all of which are commonly used in the Hungarian iconic- Chicken Paprikash. It packs the herby, paprika heat of classic Hugarian cuisine in a movie popcorn.

Ingredients:

  • 1 – 3.5 oz. bag of popped popcorn
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Hungarian Paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter

Directions:

Mix together the thyme, onion and garlic salt, and paprika in a small bowl. Transfer the freshly popped popcorn to a larger zip lock bag, then add the spice mixture and drizzle the melted butter on top. Zip the bag closed and shake until the popcorn is evenly coated with spices.

HAVREFLARN POPCORN

Havreflarn is a traditional oatmeal cookie with nuts and dipped in chocolate. Melted chocolate acts as a glue to adhere the crumbled oatmeal cookies and toasted almonds to the popcorn for a Swedish inspired dessert-style movie popcorn.

Ingredients:

  • 1 – 3.5 oz. bag of popped popcorn
  • 1 cup of milk chocolate chips
  • 1 cup of broken crispy oatmeal cookies
  • 1/2 chopped toasted almonds

Directions:

Melt the milk chocolate chips in the microwave, stirring frequently. Pour over the bowl of popcorn and stir in with the broken cookie pieces and almonds.
